Women in Politics

At the Community Encouragement Foundation (CEF), we believe that women’s active political participation is vital for creating inclusive, representative, and fair governance. In Puttalam, women still face significant barriers to political involvement—culturally, socially, and institutionally. CEF is committed to breaking these barriers and building a democratic society where women can lead fearlessly, regardless of their political affiliations.

The Challenges Women Face in Politics

Although Sri Lanka’s constitution supports gender equality, women in Puttalam struggle to step into political roles due to:

These obstacles continue to suppress women’s voices in governance and policy-making.

Why Women’s Representation Matters

When women are better represented, communities benefit from:

  • More inclusive and balanced policy-making
  • Stronger focus on healthcare, education, social justice, and human rights
  • Leadership that reflects the diverse voices of all citizens

Greater female participation helps ensure that governance works for everyone.

Workshops and Skill Building

CEF organizes training sessions and workshops that help women develop leadership skills, understand political processes, and learn how to campaign effectively.

Creating Opportunities for Public Participation

Women are encouraged to take part in community meetings, public debates, and decision-making spaces where they can raise concerns and shape outcomes.

Mentorship and Leadership Networks

CEF connects young women with experienced female leaders to build networks of mentorship, guidance, and mutual support.

Non-Partisan Participation

CEF supports all women regardless of political party to take part in politics without bias. This helps create a neutral and empowering environment for leadership.

Policy Advocacy

CEF also pushes for structural policy changes, including,

  • Implementation of gender quotas
  • Safer campaigning environments
  • Anti-discrimination policies

Our Founder’s Role in This Mission

Indrani Kusumalatha, the founder of CEF, was the first civil activist in Puttalam to demand a 30% quota for women in politics. Her leadership laid the foundation for an ongoing movement to bring women into the political spotlight.
