Gender-Based Violence (GBV)
We are dedicated to ending gender-based violence by raising awareness, supporting survivors, and building safer, more respectful communities.

The Reality of Gender-Based Violence in Sri Lanka
Gender-Based Violence (GBV) continues to be a significant issue in Sri Lanka, affecting individuals across all communities. It includes physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, often driven by cultural norms, gender inequalities, and poverty. In marginalized areas like Puttalam, these issues are more severe due to social and environmental vulnerabilities.

GBV in Puttalam
The Puttalam district, with its rural and marginalized communities, faces unique GBV-related risks due to traditional gender roles, poor economic conditions, and challenges like climate change. Women and girls here are particularly vulnerable to,
- Domestic violence and physical abuse
- Sexual harassment and assault
- Psychological and emotional abuse
- Early and forced marriages
- Human trafficking and exploitation
Awareness & Education
CEF regularly organizes workshops, seminars, and public campaigns to educate communities on the effects of GBV, promote respectful relationships, and increase awareness of women’s rights. These efforts aim to change cultural attitudes and reduce tolerance for violence.

Training for Key Stakeholders
Special training programs are conducted for teachers, health workers, law enforcement, and local leaders. These sessions focus on identifying GBV, offering appropriate support, and understanding protective legal frameworks.

CEF works with local authorities to push for effective laws and policy enforcement related to GBV. They advocate for increased protection, accountability, and justice for survivors at every level.

CEF’s work has led to growing awareness, reduced stigma, and improved support systems for GBV survivors in Puttalam. Despite progress, challenges such as deep-rooted cultural norms and limited resources persist, requiring ongoing community engagement and policy commitment.
