The Challenges Faced by Single Mothers

Single mothers in Sri Lanka, especially in rural areas like Puttalam, face numerous socio-economic hardships such as poverty, social stigma, limited access to healthcare and education, and environmental challenges.
Recognizing these struggles, the Community Encouragement Foundation (CEF) initiated a long-term effort from 2006 to 2018 to empower these women, promote gender equality, and foster community resilience.

Skills Development for Economic Empowerment

Between 2006 and 2018, CEF organized vocational training in tailoring, handicrafts, agriculture, fisheries, and small-scale entrepreneurship—helping single mothers gain practical skills to earn an income. Many women launched their own businesses or joined income-generating activities, reducing reliance on aid.

Access to Capital and Financial Training

CEF introduced microfinance services, allowing women to obtain small loans to start or grow their businesses. Alongside loans, CEF provided training in entrepreneurship, business planning, and financial literacy to ensure sustainable income and growth.

Community Awareness and Peer Support

To combat social stigma, CEF ran awareness campaigns, created peer support groups, and offered counseling sessions. These initiatives helped single mothers feel accepted, valued, and confident in their identity.

Ensuring Health for Mothers and Children

In collaboration with local health authorities, CEF provided free health check-ups, maternal care, vaccinations, and nutrition awareness sessions. This improved overall well-being and health outcomes for families.

Education as a Pathway Out of Poverty

CEF supported children of single mothers by distributing school supplies, offering scholarships, and providing tutoring. This investment aimed to break the cycle of poverty through education and opportunity.

Advocating for Rights and Social Change

CEF worked closely with community leaders and local authorities to promote the rights of single mothers. This advocacy led to improved social acceptance and pushed for inclusive policy changes supporting gender equality.

Stories of Change and Empowerment

Over a decade of work brought real transformation women achieved financial independence, children received better education, and communities became more accepting.

“One single mother, trained in tailoring in 2008, went on to own a successful boutique by 2015. She now supports her family and actively mentors others in community programs.”
